Studley Women  3 v 1 Crusaders Girls

Premier outfit Studley Women played Crusaders Girls from division one at home in the Birmingham County Cup, making very hard work against ten players from a lower division. Whether it was over-confidence and complacency, Studley were slow to start. Infact they never really did get started until the second half. Crusaders took the game to Studley from the start and reduce Studley to the occasional break away attack. Crusaders were first to everything and it was only some last ditch defending and some very poor finishing that stopped Crusaders being out of sight by half time. In fact they had to wait until the fortieth minute to register a goal, when the Studley defence stood still expecting an off-side flag, but Crusaders had timed their run perfectly and slotted home to go into the break 1-0 up. After some stern words, Studley came out for the second half playing the standard of football that they had played so far this season and started to create chances with Crusaders now reduced to the occasional break. Studley pressed forward time and again but could not produce that final ball, even though player of the match Lisa Hodges tried everything she could, which usually resulted in Crusaders stopping her at all costs on occasion. With fifteen minutes remaining Studley were awarded yet another free kick. However, this time the delivery was good and the Crusaders keeper could not hold it and Tessa Whittingham was the first to react and prodded it home. This goal raised Studley even further and seemed to cause Crusaders to loose whatever discipline they had, resulting in the last fifteen minutes becoming a rather bad tempered affair. Studley kept their discipline and were rewarded when Hodges slotted home with five minutes to go. This became three when Emily “Tommy” Johnson headed home as the game drew to a close.
